Liberia has a rich history and was at one time named La Cuidad Blanca (The White City) because of the white gravel roads and white washed homes that once dominated the town.

Once you arrival in Liberia we browse the locally owned gift shops for unique wares and stop to taste some of Costa Rica's best coffees. Liberia is a warm city not just because of the climate but because of the people. Great for walking, enjoying the sights and immersing yourself in the local culture.

July 25, is the day Guanacaste officially joined Costa Rica as a province, in Spanish "El Dia de la Anexion. Liberia has parades, horse shows, cattle auctions, rodeos, fiestas and roving marimba bands.

Also the "Fiestas Civicas de Liberia" in the last week of February and first week of March with Tico style bull riding (1 bull, 300 people watching in one small bull ride ring). In Costa Rica the Bulls are never harmed, normally it is the people in the ring chasing the bull that see a bull chasing them back! It is a wonderful Tico tradition and a great way to experience Costa Rican culture without any additives!
