THE 6 BEST WATERFALLS COSTA RICA
Looking for the best waterfalls Costa Rica? We have them listed and in tours all over Costa Rica!
RIO CELESTE WATERFALL
The Rio Celeste Waterfall in located in the mountains in rural northwestern Costa Rica. Rio Celeste translates to Blue River in Spanish. The colour of the water is a natural wonder and is hardly believable until you experience it in person. The stunning colour derives from a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals.
To get to the waterfall you must walk through the Tenorio Volcano National park along the riverbed. You will see and smell the river turn from clear to marine blue. Once you reach the waterfall you will descend down 200 steps of a well-built stair case. The area around the falls is closed off and no swimming is permitted. The waterfall is 295 ft tall and is a beautiful location for pictures.
Our tour “hiking the celeste river” is a great guided expedition of the waterfall and Rio Celeste.
The Nauyaca waterfalls just outside of Dominical. By far one of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the country. The breath taking beauty is why it made our list of best waterfalls Costa Rica. One of the falls is forty-five meters high in free fall and the other, and twenty meter fall. At the bottom a 1,000 square meter and six meter deep pool. There are also other smaller natural pools where visitors can seize the opportunity and enjoy the waters with their families or friends.
A great way to experience the beauty of the waterfalls is on our Horse Back Riding Tour available from Dominical and private tours from Manual Antonio.
LLANOS DE CORTEZ WATERFALL
The Llanos de Cortez Waterfall is located near the town of Bagaces. Found just a half hour south of Liberia and its international airport. A short drive off the Pan American Highway and less than a two-hour trip from Tamarindo, Flamingo, Playa Conchal, and other beach towns in Guanacaste. These majestic falls are also a convenient stop for those traveling from the mountains near La Fortuna and Monteverde.
The waterfall is absolutely beautiful with little streams running off the rocks, forming a deep pool for swimming or wading at the bottom. Also there is a little sand area for relaxing and enjoying the view, some times there will be vendors set up offering local Costa Rican snacks and drinks. Perhaps the most exciting part of visiting this waterfall is the ledge that allows you to walk behind the falls.
We have an incredible NEW tour in this area that combines the Las Pumas Wildlife Rescue, Llanos de Cortez Waterfall and lunch and shopping in Liberia. Not yet published on our website, but is an incredible value for a combo tour! Please email us firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
LA FORTUNA WATERFALL
This 70-meter (230-foot) waterfall, located just 5 km (3 miles) from downtown La Fortuna, is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in Costa Rica. A steep trail descends nearly 600 meters (1,969 feet) to the base of the waterfall, a hike that takes 10–20 minutes. There are two observation platforms overlooking the waterfall, and swimmers can take a dip in the relaxing, cool pool. From the lower observation platform a short trail heads to a series of smaller, calmer pools located downstream.
Our combination tour includes a typical Costa Rican lunch, hanging bridge tour and the La Fortuna Waterfalls http://www.kingtours.com/La-Fortuna-Tours/Combo-Hanging-Bridges-Costa-Rica.html
LA PAZ WATERFALL GARDENS
This privately owned property features 5 waterfalls, 3.5 km (2.2 miles) of hiking trails and a large wildlife refuge. La Paz refuge is filled with over 100 Costa Rican species. A long descending trail heads from waterfall to waterfall, making an incredible day trip. A monkey refuge, wild cat refuge, frog observatory, butterfly farm, and humming bird observatory are all part of this incredible tour. Lunch at La Paz is also incredible, you will need the fuel for the hiking. However, the waterfalls are worth the visit!

MONTEZUMA HIDDEN WATERFALL
Some of the best waterfalls Costa Rica are hidden in the mountain and still the most popular! The three-tiered stunner is just a short stroll from the beach town of Montezuma. The Montezuma waterfall’s lowest tier is the most accessible. To get there walk west on the main road from downtown Montezuma, and after about 10 minutes you’ll cross a short bridge in front of La Cascada Restaurant/Hotel. Just past the bridge a rocky trail heads to the base of the waterfall.
If you’d like to reach the waterfall’s upper tiers, you have two options. The first, and most dangerous, is to follow the rugged path set back from the base of the waterfall. A better option is to head to Sun Trails, located up a steep hill just west of the parking area. Sun Trails charges a ₡2,000 entrance fee at the front desk to access their well-maintained trail system, which leads to the top of the waterfall.
We currently do not have any tours to the Montezuma waterfalls, very easy and accessible for a self guided day trip!
