Scenic Drive To San Jose With Lunch
 


A full-day excursion explores Costa Rica's incomparable landscape, features a scenic drive through the capital, and includes a tour of the National Museum and the famed National Theater. Board your air-conditioned transportation and drive along the Pan American Highway, the nation's most scenic road, to the capital of San Jose. Your route travels through lush valleys, green pasturelands, coffee plantations, and the small towns of San Ramon and Naranjo. Arriving in San Jose, your scenic drive of this cosmopolitan capital takes in the Metropolitan Cathedral and the landmark National Theater. With its ornate 19th-century, neo-Classical architecture, elaborate murals, and gilded baroque fixtures, the National Theater is considered the most beautiful building in the country. Visit the National Museum, Costa Rica's most important historical museum, housed in a former army barracks that was the scene of fighting during the civl war of 1948. Notice the bullet-riddled stone walls. The museum is home to a vast collection of archaeological and historic artifacts, including a display of replicas and original pieces from the city's gold museum. Drive through the exclusive Rohrmoser district, La Sabana Park, and National Stadium. After your city visit, enjoy a lunch buffet of Costa Rican dishes while you enjoy beautiful gardens, a relaxing waterfall, flowers, refreshing air, and the sounds of Costa Rican music at Valle del Sol, a private colonial-style estate. On the return to your ship, you will arrive at the town of Sarchi, home of Costa Rica's native art. It was here in Sarchi that, more than a century ago, primitive local artists began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate, colorful designs. There was spirited but good-nature competition among families to see who could create the most colorful designs. The sturdy agricultural vehicles, hauled by teams of oxen, soon became the primary means of transportation throughout the nation, bumping over rough roads and trails to carry elegantly dressed young ladies to festivals and dances in nearby villages. SPECIAL NOTES The drive between Puntarenas and San Jose is approximately two hours. Tour sequence may vary to avoid overcrowding. On Sunday arrivals when the National Theater is closed and access is not permitted, the Gold Museum is substituted.
