Travel the Pan American Highway through sugarcane fields and coffee plantations to visit Costa Rica's most important town for traditional craftsmanship.
Board your transportation and drive along the Pan American Highway, traveling past sugarcane fields and coffee plantations. Leave the highway and take the historic old "oxcart road" to the village of Grecia and its historic all-metal church. Continue to Sarchí, famed for its multi-colored wooden crafts and painted oxcarts. This local tradition began in the early 20th century when an ingenious peasant painted his oxcart with geometrical patterns in strong, bright colors. The practice was copied throughout Costa Rica, but in Sarchí there arose a complete industry of striking, handmade wooden and painted crafts. Enjoy approximately one hour exploring the village, observing skilled craftsmen at work, and browsing for arts and crafts. During this excursion you will have the opportunity to stop at Sarchi's main square to take a memorable picture of the largest oxcart ever built. The return drive includes a stop at the Butterfly farm at El Jardin.
SPECIAL NOTES
The drive to Sarchí is approximately one hour and 45 minutes each way. Tour sequence may vary to avoid overcrowding.
