This 6500ha national park is one of the
oldest and best known in Costa Rica. The
centerpiece is Poas Volcano (2704m) with a
crater !.3 km wide and 300m deep. Recently
there have been three major periods of
activity; 1888 to 1895, 1903 to 1912 and
1952 to 1954.Occasionally geyser eruptions
take place, but mostly the crater is a
bubbling and steaming cauldron that does not
pose any threat. Poas second crater, Laguna
Botos (Lake Botos) is a lake surrounded by
dwarf cloud forest. This unique forest is
home to various species of birds among wich
you will find humming birds, Toucans and
many others.
